GULF SHORES, Ala.— Sarah Mathews fired an opening round even-par 72 en route to helping Memphis (292) take a nine-stroke lead after one round at the UAB Fall Beach Blast.

Mathews, who posted scores of 74-73 to earn runner-up honors at last year’s event, is in a tie for second heading into Tuesday’s final round at the par-72, 5,974-yard Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club. Two other Lady Tigers finished in the top five individuals, with Marissa Steen and Kathleen Glavin carding rounds of 73 on Monday. Steen and Glavin are tied for fourth position.

Julia Hodgson posted a 74 in round one and is in a six-way tie for seventh. Alex Aläng and Ashely Kees are tied for 17th position after posting 77’s in the first round.

The Lady Tigers turned in a team total of 292 on day one, besting Marshall and Louisiana-Monroe (301) by nine strokes. Belmont (305) and Austin Peay (308) round out the top five.

“I’m very proud of all the girls for their hard work and dedication this season,” Memphis head coach Beth Harrelson said. “They showed great maturity on the course today. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

The UAB Fall Beach Blast concludes tomorrow as Memphis seeks to win the title for the second consecutive season.
