Glavin Tied for Lead After One Round at UAB Fall Beach Blast
Nov. 2, 2009
Kathleen Glavin (72) carded the lowest round of her career to grab a share of the first round lead at the 2009 UAB Fall Beach Blast. She is tied with UAB’s senior Carolyn Cochran. The Lady Tigers posted a team total of 300 to finish in second place after one round. MTSU leads after shooting a team score of 297 on day one.
Glavin is poised to claim Memphis’s first individual title since Stacey Tate earned medalist honors at the 2006 Lady Eagle Invitational. The Memphis team total of 300 at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club is yet another new best under second year head coach Beth Harrelson. Only three shots back of first round leader MTSU, the Lady Tigers have a chance to return to the winners’ circle for the first time since claiming the 2007 Conference USA Championship.
“I’m just so proud of how everyone competed out there today,” said Coach Harrelson. “Kathleen played extremely well, as did Sarah. It’s exciting to be in the position to make a run tomorrow. We just need to go out there, take it one shot at a time, and play our game.”
Freshman Sarah Mathews (74) also posted a career low score on day one. She is currently tied for fifth. Leslie Grabeman, seeking her fourth consecutive top-20 finish, is in a tie for 15th after carding an opening round 76. Marissa Steen is only three shots out of tenth after firing an opening round 78, leaving her in a tie for 22nd. Alex Aläng is in T38 after shooting an opening round 79.
Katelyn Stanier (Samford) and Morgan Hale (MTSU) are one stroke behind Glavin and Cochran after carding opening round 73’s. Five players, including Lady Tiger Sarah Mathews, are tied for fifth with a round one scores of 74.
MTSU (297) leads Memphis (300) by three strokes going into the second and final round. Samford (301) is one stroke back. Arkansas State (306) and Belmont (306) are tied for fourth.
The 2009 UAB Fall Beach Blast continues tomorrow, November 3rd at 8 a.m.
