MEMPHIS — The University of Memphis women’s golf successfully defended its title at the UAB Fall Beach Blast Tuesday behind Marissa Steen’s (73-70) individual medalist performance. The Lady Tigers turned in scores of 292-300 amidst rainy and soggy conditions at the Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club in Gulf Shores, Ala to win their second title of the 2010-11 campaign. Louisiana-Monroe (301-312) finished 21 strokes back in second, and Marshall (301-316) took third. “It was tough out there today,” Memphis head coach Beth Harrelson said. “The weather was anything but cooperative, and I’m just proud of everyone for playing well and sticking it out.” Steen, who was in a tie for fourth heading into Tuesday’s final round, captured her second inidivual title of the season and third of her career. The junior from West Chester, Ohio has finished in the top-10 in every event thus far in 2010-11. “Marissa is playing so well right now,” Harrelson said. “She’s put in the hard work, and I’m so happy for her.” Three other Lady Tiger golfers joined Steen in the top-10. Kathleen Glavin finished fourth after posting rounds of 73-76 and Alex Aläng carded rounds of 77-75 to land in a tie for seventh position. Sarah Mathews, who finished as the runner-up at the 2009 UAB Fall Beach Blast, ended with a 36-hole total of 151 (72-79) to finish sixth in this year’s event.
