Women's Golf in 14th Place After First Day of Miccosukee Championship
Feb. 21, 2005 MIAMI, Fla. - The University of Memphis women's golf team finished the first day of the Miccosukee Women's Championship in 14th place on Monday at the Miccosukee Country Club hosted by Florida International University. After shooting a first round 332, the Lady Tigers cut six strokes in the second round, scoring a 326 and finishing the day with a 658, 36-round total. Sophomore Stacey Tate led Memphis with an 80-76--156 on the par 73 course, putting her in a tie for 17th place heading into the final round on Tuesday. The Lady Tigers struggled in their first spring tournament of the season. Windy conditions and a firm course forced the players to make adjustments to their approach. "We didn't adjust well," said Memphis head coach Jenny Bruun. "It's been a crazy day. The decision making on our part was poor. This is a very short golf course, so if you hit the right shot, you're going to score. With the first tournament of the spring, everyone is trying to adjust back into the setting of competitiveness in tournament play." In her first tournament back since a back injury forced her to withdraw from the final fall tournament, sophomore Meghan Mahoney is tied for 47th place with an 81-82--163 total. Freshman Ashleigh Garman is tied for 75th with a 86-83--169, sophomore Kathryn O'Rourke is tied for 77th with a 85-85--170, and sophomore Cameron Barber rounds out the team with a 89th place tie after shooting a 86-88--174. The University of Colorado currently holds the first place position after scoring a 306-310--616. The Buffaloes' Hannah Hoch sits alone at first place individually with a 74-73--147. Tournament host FIU finished the day in third place. The Lady Tigers will play the final 18-holes of the tournament on Tuesday with a 7:45 shotgun start. "We just have to try and learn from days like this where we didn't play our best," Bruun said.
