Memphis Sweeps Conference USA Golfer of the Week Honors

IRVING, Texas - Memphis' Alex Aläng and Jonathan Fly earned Conference USA Golfer of the Week honors as announced by the league office Wednesday. Aläng finished in third place and led the Lady Tigers to a second-place finish at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic, while Fly shot in red figures in all three rounds to garner second-place honors at the UK Bluegrass Invitational. Aläng is the third Lady Tiger to win the award this season. Marissa Steen was name the Co-Female Golfer of the Week on March 3 for her medalist performance at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic. Leslie Grabeman also received the honors last fall for her performance at the Lady Red Wolves Classic. “I’m excited that Alex is playing better and feeling more confident on the course,” said Memphis head coach Beth Harrelson. “She’s peaking at the right time with the Conference USA Championship coming up.” Aläng posted scores of 75-73-76 to finish third at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic, the lowest finish of her career. The freshman led the Tigers to their lowest three-round total of the season (302-303-304--909) and s second place finish. The Tullinge, Sweden native netted 42 pars on the weekend which was tops for any golfer, and tied for the lead in par-4 scoring average at 4.03. This is her first career Golfer of the Week honor. Fly is the first U of M golfer to receive golfer of the week honors since Jack Belote garnered the accolades during the 2008-09 season. Fly recorded three-straight under-par rounds (70-69-68) at the UK Bluegrass Invitational to post a career-low finish of second.
His performance led the Tigers to a share of second place in the 24-field event. This is his first career Golfer of the Week honor. |
