Francella Invited to NCAA Finals
May 14, 2001
Memphis, TN - Lady Tiger freshman golf sensation Meaghan Francella continues to receive accolades over her play during the 2000-01 season.
Already named the Conference USA Freshman of the Year, as well as being selected to the C-USA All-Conference and All-Tournament teams, Francella has now added an achievement that only one other Lady Tiger, Christy Dristy, ever received. Francella has received an invitational to the NCAA Finals in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida.
The Port Chester, New York, native tied for 11th at the NCAA West Regional last week. The top eight teams and the top two individuals, who are not on one of the advancing eight teams, move on the NCAA Finals each year. Francella and Young-A Yang of Tennessee were invited from the West Regional.
Francella, who won two tournaments this year, joins Christy Dristy as the only Lady Tigers to make the NCAA Finals. Dristy participated in the first ever NCAA Golf Championships for women held at Stanford in 1982. The previous season, both Dristy and teammate Susan Hundley played in the AIAW Championships which were the predecessor to the NCAA.
The NCAA Finals will begin of May 22 and will run through May 25 at the Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, FL. The event will be played on the El Campeon course which plays 6,106 yards.
