Steen Named to Golf World's 50 Women's College Players to Watch List
Sept. 7, 2011
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - University of Memphis senior golfer Marissa Steen has been named to Golf World's 2011-12 50 Women's College Golf Players to Watch List, as announced by the magazine on Wednesday.
Steen, one of two Lady Tiger seniors, finished last season as Conference USA's runner-up and has recorded five total individual tournament victories throughout her U of M career, including a first-place finish at Monday's rain-shortened Chris Banister Golf Classic.
The West Chester, Ohio, native holds Memphis' single-season scoring record of 73.97 strokes-per-round, was a member of the 2011 C-USA All-Tournament team and has been tabbed as C-USA's Golfer of the Week on three separate occasions (March 3, 2010, Sept. 15, 2010 and Nov. 3, 2010).
The senior leader has also played a vital role in the Lady Tigers' academic accomplishments.
Paced by Steen's perfect 4.0 GPA last year, the Lady Tigers posted a cumulative team GPA of 3.723 for the 2010-11 academic year. This tally was the highest GPA of any Tiger athletic program and the highest mark of any sport in Conference USA. The mark went on to rank the U of M seventh in the nation in collective team GPA among NCAA Division I, II and III women's golf programs, as announced by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA).
In July, Steen fired rounds of 70-68-74-66--278 to finish 10-under in the LPGA's "Q-School" Stage I qualifying tournament, tying for sixth place in the stroke-play competition and advancing to Stage II.
Stage II qualifying is slated to be played on Sept. 27-30 at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top-70 performers and ties from Stage II will advance to Q-School's final qualifier, Stage III.
Stage III, will be contested over 90 holes and held Nov. 30 through Dec. 4 on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2012 LPGA membership and all others who make the cut will receive LPGA Futures Tour status.
The Lady Tiger team returns to the course on Sept. 19 in Louisville, Ky., for the 2011 Wild Eggs Cardinal Cup hosted by the University of Louisville.
