Lady Tigers Open Season at Old Waverly
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After only a couple short weeks of practice, the University of Memphis women's golf team will compete in their first tournament of the 2012-13 season on Monday. The Lady Tigers open the campaign at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational hosted by Mississippi State in West Point, Miss.Not only is this the first event of the season for the Lady Tigers, but it also marks the first time the Mississippi State University women's golf team will be hosting an event. The tournament will feature 11 teams, including Arkansas, Cincinnati, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Memphis, Mississippi State, Murray State, South Alabama, South Florida, Southern Miss, and Tulane. Of the competing teams, Tulane had the highest ranking according to Golfstat at the end of 2011-12. The Green Wave were ranked 34th while Arkansas was ranked 35th. Kentucky was also in the top-50 with their ranking of 40th, and South Florida fell just shy of the top-50, at 51. Memphis was ranked 97th at the conclusion of last season. Memphis will start play on the back-nine on Monday morning, starting with Sarah Mathews who tees off at 9:40 a.m. Natalie Turk follows at 9:50 a.m., and Ashleigh Whisenant tees off at 10:00 a.m. Ashley Kees and Julia Hodgson round out the Lady Tigers' team with their 10:10 and 10:20 a.m. tee times, respectively. That group will be playing with members of Cincinnati and Southern Miss. Shelby Sain will also take the course for the Lady Tigers, teeing off at 11:00 a.m. The Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational will be played at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. The club has hosted numerous championship events in its history. Old Waverly hosted the 1999 U.S. Women's Open as well as the men's and women's SEC Championships. This week, the par 72 course will play 6,204 yards. The tournament begins on Monday, September 10 at 9:30 a.m. with split tee times. On Tuesday there will be a 9/11 tribute at 8:00 a.m. followed by split tee times at 8:30 a.m. The tournament will conclude on Wednesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. There will be live scoring for the tournament on golfstat.com.
