Lady Tigers Tied for Fifth at Season Opener
Sept. 10, 2006 VERONA, Wis.- Battling wind and rain, as well as a talented field, the University of Memphis women's golf team started their first tournament of the season off right by completing the first two rounds of the 2006 Badger Invitational in the top five. The Lady Tigers currently tied with Iowa State for fifth place going into Monday's final round. Senior Kathryn O'Rourke leads the Tigers by carding an 11-over-par 155 (81-74) to tie for eighth place after two rounds. O'Rourke opened the tournament with a first round 81, but recovered with a 2-over-par performance in the second shotgun of the day. O'Rourke's sophomore teammate Rachel Larson is right behind her. Larson opened with a 3-over-par 75, but fell back toward the pack with a second round 81. The Longmont, Colo., native currently sits in a tie for 11th after firing a 12-over-par 156 on day one. Junior Dawn-Marie Conaty remains in striking distance of the top ten after recording a 14-over-par 158 (78-80), good enough to tie for 18th place after two rounds. Seniors Stacey Tate and Cameron Barber rounded out the Lady golfers first day by finishing tied in 41st place at 164. All totaled, the Lady Tigers shot 631 (314-317) on the day, four strokes behind host Wisconsin for fourth place and 11 strokes in back of day-one leader Indiana. Sunday's first two rounds were played through a steady rain with temperatures in the low 50's and steady winds of 10-15 mph. The scores reflected the difficult playing conditions as no golfer was able to finish the first two rounds under par. Kansas State's Michelle Regan was the low finisher on day one at 2-over-par. Monday's final round begins with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun at University Ridge Golf Club in Verona, Wis. Live scoring for the Badger Women's Golf Invitational is available online at www.golfstat.com.
