Lady Tiger Golf Opens Season At Cincinnati Fall Classic
Sept. 11, 2008
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's golf team opens its season Sunday at the University of Cincinnati Fall Classic. This weekend's tournament is the Tigers' first competition under new head coach Beth Harrelson. "I'm excited for the season to get underway. Even though this is a rebuilding year, I am confident that our girls will represent the University of Memphis well," said Harrelson. "It's also exciting to be back at my alma mater, working under my former head coach and mentor, (current Associate Athletic Director) Lynn Parks. I can't wait for the season to start." The tournament will be a new experience for three Lady Tigers. Marrisa Steen, Caitlyn McDonald and Kathleen Glavin all will compete in their first college tournament. It will also be a first for Harrelson, as she leads the Lady Tigers for the first time as head coach. "It's definitely going to be an adjustment from being a teaching pro and high school coach, but I'm confident that I can make the transition. I'm very optimistic about the future of the program," Harrelson said. Harrelson said she expects a strong showing from Steen, who qualified as the squad's No. 1 player this week. "Marrisa is one of the girls that represents the future of the University of Memphis women's golf program, so I'm very excited for her to play so well this early. She told me coming into the year that one of her goals for the season was to qualify first for a tournament, and I'm excited that she has already accomplished that," said Harrelson. The Cincinnati Fall Classic begins on Sunday at the Elk Run Golf Course. The second and third round will be played on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
