Go Tigers!

In the third installment of our nine-part 10 questions series, we put Sarah Mathews in the spotlight. The Memphis native attended St. Agnes High School, and is one of three seniors on the team. Mathews is one of two Lady Tigers that appeared in all five fall events, turning in her best round of 75 in the final round of the FedEx Memphis Women’s Intercollegiate. Earlier this week, in preparation for the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Wahiwa, O’ahu, Mathews registered a hole-in-one on the 174-yard fifth hole at Leilehua Golf Course.

  1. Why did you choose Memphis?
The facilities we have on campus and the courses we play. It is rare to find the quality combination of the two in college golf. I was also impressed with the accreditation that the FCBE (Fogelman College of Business &Economics) has, along with the school of accountancy.
  2. What’s your favorite class at Memphis so far?
I took two of my international marketing classes this summer in London, so the combination of the course material and the study abroad experience is pretty hard to beat.
  3. Other than golf, what sport would you be playing?
That is a toss-up between tennis and soccer.
  4. What is the best golf advice you have received?
Stay committed to your routine and the shot at hand. Believe in yourself. Have fun!
  5. If you could play a round of golf with anyone, who would it be?
My grandfather. He introduced the game to my mother, who consequently passed it on to me. He passed away when I was four, so I would love to be able to play a round with a man who had such a love and passion for the game that has given so much to me.
  6. Who is your golf role model and why?
Loren Roberts. His persistence and hard work early in his career to earn and keep his card inspired me to have faith and never give up on my dream. He is one of the most genuine people I have met, and he is a great asset to the game of golf. Oh, and I wouldn’t mind having his amazing ability on the putting green.
  7. If you were stranded on an island, what is one item you would take with you?
My 60 degree wedge! If I ever got off the island, I would have the best bunker play around.
  8. If there was a team American Idol competition, who would win, why? Who would finish last, why?
Julia Hodgson would definitely take home the top prize. We have had a few good singing sessions on the way home from tournaments and she never disappoints. As for last place, Ashleigh Whisenant, she can hit a ball long and straight, but singing… well, that’s what showers are for.
  9. If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why?
A chinchilla. With 600 hairs per follicle, they are some of the softest, sweetest animals. Plus they have to live in a temperature no higher than 72 degrees so I wouldn’t have to be worried about being too hot or cold.
  10. Do you have any pre-round superstitions? During round superstitions? What are they?
No pre-round superstitions, but for those who know me, I will have definitely downed a few cups of coffee. That is a must. During a round, if I am playing well and I started the round with a pullover or compression shirt, I won’t take it off.
