Prep: Gjertsen prepped at St. Thomas Aquinas HS but did most of her damage playing for the U-17 Southwest United club along with fellow Lady Tiger signee, Kari Rawe. That club won the Gold Medal at the USA Cup where they posted an 8-0 record, scoring 46 goals, with Gjertsen accounting for half of the load with 23. She was a member of the Zone 5 Regional Team in 1995 that went on to the Alberta Summer Games. She was also selected to the Premier Division all-star team and was voted the all-star tournament MVP. She lettered four years in basketball and participated in track and field from seventh until 11th grade, where she won Provincial Gold Medals for the javelin and long jump. She was also named female athlete of the year for basketball and track in 1998-99 and was selected as the top female athlete for St. Thomas Aquinas, as a junior.
