Aug 14, 2013
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's soccer team had little trouble in their first exhibition of the season as the Lady Tigers handed Arkansas State a 5-0 defeat in a match that consisted of three 30-minute periods.
The Lady Tigers took no time in getting their first goal as junior Nugene Nugent made some fancy footwork to get by her defender and find senior Christabel Oduro from eight yards out for a 1-0 Memphis lead less than two minutes into the match.
Memphis increased its advantage at the 13:51 mark as Oduro found freshman Valerie Sanderson from seven yards away to put the Lady Tigers up 2-0.
With two minutes to go in the first period, Nugent added to the Memphis lead with a shot over the goalkeeper Michaela Supple's outstretched arms to the top of the box to give the Lady Tigers a 3-0 cushion.
Memphis kept the offense going in the second period with Nugent going past her defender and finding the left corner of the goal from five yards out for a 4-0 Memphis lead.
Carly Cassady added to the Lady Tiger advantage with 9:35 to go in the second period with a shot to the left side from Nugent six yards out.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christa Strickland started the match and logged 60 minutes in goal. She faced two shots and came up with saves on both to keep the Red Wolves off the scoreboard. Freshman Maryse Bard-Martel played the final 30 minutes, but ASU didn't put a shot on frame in the final third of the match.
Memphis out-shot Arkansas State 21-2 in the match and held a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal.
The Lady Tigers travel to Auburn on Saturday for a 7 p.m. matchup in their second and final tune-up for the season. Memphis opens the 2013 campaign at Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Friday, August 23 against Samford at 7 p.m.
