Atkins scored two goals in the first half

JONESBORO, Ark. - Kaitlyn Atkins scored two goals in the first six minutes to propel Memphis to an impressive 4-0 victory at Arkansas State in an exhibition match Sunday.

Coming off a 1-0 loss to Mississippi State on Wednesday, Memphis looked to attack early and Atkins helped the cause. Freshman Sessen Stevens gathered the ball on the left side and fired a shot that was deflected off the keeper and put away by Atkins for the goal.

Freshman Veronica Bosco set up Atkins second as she intercepted a free kick near the top of the box. Bosco passed to her right and set up Atkins for the goal.

Sophomore transfer Necee Jennings made it 3-0 in the 35th minute. Junior midfielder Emily Adamic dribbled up the middle and made the unselfish pass to the left side of the box where Jennings rocketed the shot to the back of the net for the 3-0 lead.

Atkins tallied an assist in the 75th minute as she served a corner kick into the box. Junior defender Marissa Duguay settled the ball in the box and powered the ball to the back right corner of the net.

Memphis out-shot the Red Wolves 19-6 and held a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel made one save in the match and finishes with eight in exhibition play. Memphis opens the regular season on Sunday, August 24, at Alabama. The home opener is Tuesday, August 26, against Lipscomb at 7 p.m.
