MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Following an easy 6-0 win over Christian Brothers University, the Memphis women's soccer team stepped up their level of competition Friday night against nationally ranked Saint Louis and fell to the Lady Billikens 4-1.
"This was a good lesson for us," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "The reason we play good teams like this is so that we can learn what we need to work on, and Saint Louis definitely showed us some of our weaknesses."
The Lady Billikens got started quickly, as Dee Guempel bent a shot from the left side of the box into the right corner. From that point Saint Louis continued to dominate the half, heading into the locker room with a 3-0 lead.
Memphis rallied in the second half, scoring when transfer Harumi Someya deflected a pass to forward Geneil Newbern for a goal. Despite allowing another score by the Billikens later in the match, the Lady Tigers managed to stay even with Saint Louis during the second half.
Monaghan was optimistic about his team's performance in the later portion of the contest, and thinks that the match will go along way to preparing his team for the season. The seventh year head coach has no doubts that his team will recover and be focused for their season opener.
"That was a good team," Monaghan said. "This team was as good as any we'll play all year, and we showed that we could play with them in the second half. I'm still confident heading into the season that we can play with anybody."
The Memphis women will open the season on the road next Friday at Tennessee Tech at 4 p.m.
