Complete Release in PDF Format MARTIN, Tenn. - The scoring parade continued for the Memphis women's soccer team Sunday as the Lady Tigers completed their opening weekend sweep of the Ohio Valley Conference with a decisive 7-0 win over UT-Martin. Both Kylie Hayes and Shoko Mikami recorded three-goal matches. Mikami recorded three goals in both of the Lady Tiger wins this weekend while Hayes finished the road trip with five total goals. Unlike their opening match, the Lady Tigers got off to a slow start Sunday, managing just two goals in the first half. Both scores came courtesy of Mikami. The senior scored the first off of a pass from freshman Brittany Baldwin and put in the second on a free kick from 25 yards out. While happy with the lead, the Tiger coaching staff wasn't satisfied with the way their club performed in the first period. "We came out a little sluggish. I think you could see it in warm-ups, and it carried into the game," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "We were lucky to score in the first half, but we had a good talk at halftime and played well in the second half." Just two minutes into the second half Hayes scored her first goal and pushed the Memphis lead to 3-0. Six minutes later junior Harumi Someya split the Skyhawk defense down the middle and put the ball into the net.
Hayes registered her second goal, knocking the ball in from the corner after receiving a double feed from Mikami and Jocelyn Whitehead. The Piqua, Ohio native completed her hat trick with just six minutes remaining, scoring on an assist from midfielder Tori Dalton. Mikami finished her scoring and gave the Lady Tigers their final margin of victory when she put in a pass from Hayes with only 17 seconds left in the match. Memphis continued to play smothering defense Sunday, allowing only five shots Sunday and only two shots on goal. Lady Tiger defenders saved both shots, and Memphis goalkeeper Isabel Briones was able to pick up the shutout without registering a save. "I was pleased with the weekend and with the way the girls responded in the second half today," Monaghan said. "I think we're still adjusting to playing back-to-back games every weekend, but we have to understand that good teams will punish us if we come out slow." Tough competition will be in store for Memphis next weekend when the team hosts the Nike Lady Tiger Fall Tournament at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Lady Tigers will play Friday night against Alabama at 7 p.m. and take on 2005 NCAA Tournament team Samford at 2 p.m. Sunday. |
