Lady Tigers Soccer Plays To 2-2 Tie With Southwest Missouri
Sept. 2, 2001
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis women's soccer played Southwest Missouri St. to a 2-2 stalemate at Echles Field on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 11:06 mark when junior midfielder Becca Amrozowicz ricocheted a rebound past the SMS goalie. Freshman forward Michelle Sorensen continued the Lady Tiger assault when she drove a shot into the lower right corner on an assist from senior defender Suzanne Williams.
The LadyTigers looked to be cruising, but the momentum shifted when, in an attempt to clear, a Memphis defender put a header into her own goal at the 33:19 mark. Southwest Missouri midfielder Debbie Stark scored the Bears' second tally on an assist from midfielder Mandy Fisher with less than three minutes remaining in the first half.
The next 75 minutes were a wash as both teams could not convert on 10 shots apiece. Memphis' best chance came near the end of regulation when Sorensen sprinted one-on-one with an SMS defender down the left side, but Sorensen's shot was deflected and sailed left of the goal. Lady Tiger keeper Katarina Wicksell was outstanding, compiling seven saves.
The Lady Tigers are back in action when they travel to Evansville to take on the Aces at 7 p.m. on Friday.
