Lady Tigers Edge Tennessee-Martin 2-1
Sept. 8, 2004
Martin, Tenn. - Freshman Carla Scanniello assisted on both Memphis goals as the Lady Tiger soccer team got back into the win column Wednesday with a 2-1 win at Tennessee-Martin. The win improves the Tigers to 3-1 on the year.
Sophomore Beth Keating scored her first career goal to open the scoring 16:22 into the game. Fellow sophomore Madison Cheek then netted her second goal of the year less than a minute before the half at the 44:09 mark, which gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead and would prove to be the game-winner.
UTM's Kindal Keim scored the Skyhawks' lone goal of the game in the second half at 65:14 to make it a 2-1 game. The Tiger defense was able to hold off the Skyhawks for the remainder of the game. The Tigers have now given up just three goals in four games.
Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Haerens played the entire game once again, this time needing just five saves to record her third win of the season. The Tigers outshot the Skyhawks 16-12 and put eight of those shots on goal.
The Lady Tigers are now 3-1 for the first time since the 2000 season, when they lost the first game of the year and then won three straight. They have also now won more games (2) by one goal than they won all of last season when they only won one game by a single goal.
Memphis returns home to take on Tennessee Tech on Friday at 8:00 p.m. at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. That game will be the second of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team, who will play Western Kentucky beginning at 6:00 p.m.
