MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Freshman defender Angela Willoughby's penalty kick at the 28:55 mark gave the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead over UT Martin Sunday afternoon and Memphis would never look back. The Lady Tigers cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Skyhawks for their first win of the 2001 campaign at Echles Field today.

Willoughby's penalty kick came after a UT-Martin defender was called for a hand-ball in the box. The Manchester, England, native fired a shot past the diving UT-Martin keeper for her first collegiate goal.

The Lady Tigers stretched their lead to 2-0 less than three minutes later when junior forward Ali Baker capitalized on an assist from freshman defender Annika Moller. The Lady Tigers went on to outshoot the Skyhaws 12-4 in the first half.

Memphis dominated the second half as well, keeping the ball in UT-Martin's half for the majority of the period. The Lady Tigers got off 12 second-half shots and shut down the Skyhawk offensive attack, keeping them from taking even one shot after the break. Junior midfielder Becca Amrozowicz capped the Lady Tiger scoring, converting on an assist from sophomore midfielder Jennifer Bronars with under a minute to play.

Memphis had three players with five or more shots for the game, including Baker (6), Amrozowicz (5) and freshman forward Monica Powell (5), who made her first collegiate start.

Head coach Brooks Monaghan was pleased with the Lady Tiger effort, but found Memphis' inability to convert on a number of close shots troubling. "I'm happy, but I think there were a few opportunities that we missed out on," said Monaghan.

Those close plays can be attributed - in great part - to the play of UT-Martin goalkeeper Caryn Scheufler who posted 11 saves, including a number of sparkling, acrobatic stops.

The Lady Tigers are back in action when they head to Starkville, Miss., for a tilt with the Bulldogs at 4 p.m. on Friday.
