Memphis, Tenn. – Memphis took on the Colorado Buffalos today at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. At the end of 90 minutes the scoreboard read 2-1 in favor of Colorado. This loss brings the Memphis record to 3-2-1 on the season.

Head Coach Brooks Monaghan was happy with the effort his team gave this afternoon despite the outcome.

“We want to give credit to Colorado because they are a fantastic team,” Monaghan said. “They didn’t panic when we went one up on them. Overall it was a very good battle. I’m very pleased with our girls. We watched a lot of film on Colorado and we knew they were a very strong team and a team that will go very far into the NCAA tournament. We showed that we can compete at this level for sure and I’m very pleased with our girls for that. I’m not happy with a loss, but I’m proud of the way our girls fought. I thought we did some really good things and unfortunately we came up a little bit short. I think if we come into each game with this type of mentality we’re going to win a lot of ballgames.”

Sophomore forward Melissa Smith scored her second goal of the weekend netting the Lady Tigers’ only score with 3:11 left in the first half.

“I was really pleased with the overall effort in both games,” Monaghan said of the weekend’s games with Big 12 opponents. “That was a big concern for us because we need to come out and we have to fight just as hard on Sunday as we do on Fridays and the girls did that. It was great to get the win over Oklahoma. I know they are struggling a little bit, but they are still a very talented team. We just came up a little bit short today, but its different than last Sunday. We hate to lose, but if your kids are giving 110% and playing with discipline you are going to go a long way. Our kids did that today. This game will also help us for the future.”

Memphis wraps up their non-conference schedule in Starkville, Miss. Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
