Cincinnati Rallies To Beat Lady Tigers 2-1 In C-USA Women's Soccer Action
Sept. 21, 2003
Cincinnati, Ohio-- - Memphis struck first in its Conference USA women's soccer match with Cincinnati, but could not hold on for the victory as the Bearcats scored to unanswered goals to defeat the Lady Tigers 2-1 Sunday at Meyers Field. Junior Yuiko Konno scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season for Memphis (1-4-3) in the seventh minute, but a stingy Bearcat defense would not allow another tally as Cincinnati (3-4-1) snapped a three-game losing streak.
The Lady Tigers grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of play when a cross from freshman Melissa Savage caromed off Cincinnati goalkeeper Sherry Slye and was tapped in by Konno. Savage was credited with an assist on the play, the first of her career.
That would be the only goal the Lady Tigers would get by Slye, who made five saves, as the Bearcats added a goal in the first and second halves to claim the victory. Both Cincinnati goals came on set shots as sophomore Jennifer Sibert scored the game winner on a 30-yard free kick with just under 30 minutes remaining in the match.
The first Cincinnati goal came on a penalty kick in the first half just six minutes after Konno's goal. Tasha Wagner drilled home the penalty shot past a diving Kari Rawe in the Memphis goal to even the match at one. Cincinnati outshot Memphis 11-8 in the contest as each team attempted three corner kicks. Rawe made four saves for Memphis.
Memphis returns to action with a pair of home C-USA matches this weekend. The first will be part of a doubleheader with the men's team as the Lady Tigers will take on DePaul Friday in the night cap with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. The men's team will play East Carolina Friday at 5:30 p.m.
