MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Rutgers freshman Erik Sa scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute as Rutgers (4-4-1, 1-1-0) defeated No. 19 Memphis (6-2-1, 1-1-0) 1-0 in front of a great crowd at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Saturday night.

Sa finished on a header after a cross from Mael Corboz. The ball went just past Tigers goalie Cody Uzcategui and into the net.

Memphis put pressure on Rutgers throughout the game, and especially in the last 15 minutes of the game, but could not equalize.

Mark Sherrod led the Tigers with seven shots, several of which just missed the back of the net, and also had two shots on target.

Uzcategui finished with two saves on the night and is now 6-2-1 in 2013.

The game was even throughout the first half. Sherrod got the first shot of the game in the eighth minute, but his header was wide of the target.

Freshman Raul Gonzalez also played a strong game. In the 19th minute, Gonzalez put a low shot on target towards the corner of the Rutgers goal. Rutgers goalie David Greczek was able to push the ball wide of the post.

Uzcategui made his first save of the night in the 30th minute on a shot by Nathan Bruccoleri.

Memphis created two chances in the second half through strong play by Sherrod, Gonzalez and Simon Estornel.

In the 62nd minute, Sherrod was able to get free down the right sideline, and sent a cross into the box that was just out of the reach of Wil Linder.

Sherrod sent a header just wide in the 68th minute after build-up play by Gonzalez and Estornel. Estornel was able to pick out Gonzalez, who crossed a ball into the box. Sherrod met the ball, but the header just missed.

Rutgers capitalized on the next chance with Sa's goal in the 72nd minute. Corboz crossed the ball to Sa, who headed the ball into the left corner of the net to give Rutgers the 1-0 lead.

Memphis had three more shots in the final portion of the game, but could not get the tying goal.

Greczek finished with three saves for Rutgers in the victory.

Memphis returns to action Wednesday when they host UAB in a non-conference tilt at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and admission is FREE for all fans.
