Memphis, Tenn.-- - The University of Memphis women's soccer team equalled its season high in goals with three as the Lady Tigers defeated UT-Martin 3-1 at Echles Field Wednesday. The victory snapped a four-game winless streak for the Lady Tigers (2-6-3) and extended the Skyhawks' (5-4-2) season-long winless streak to three games.
After numerous scoring chances in the opening half, Moller finally capitalized on one in the 30th minute and put the Lady Tigers ahead 1-0. Junior Yuiko Konno sent a pass from the left wing that Moller finished just inside the left post sending it past a diving Megan Dempsey in goal for UT-Martin. The assist gave Konno a team-leading 10 points on the season and was her second helper on the season.
"It was a good win for our team," Memphis head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We kept it close because we didn't finish all the opportunities we had. But in the end it's another win under out belts and I'm looking forward to the next one against Alabama A&M."
Memphis also got goals from its top two scorers as Yuiko Konno added her fifth goal of the season and Kirsty Marr had her fourth which sealed the game for the Tigers in the 89th minute. Konno has both game-winning goals for the Lady Tigers this season.
The Lady Tigers outshot the visitors 12-5 in the first half forcing Dempsey to make three saves. Midfielder Susannah Dawells narrowly missed her first goal of the season sending a blast from 25 yards out off the cross bar.
Memphis quickly took a 2-0 lead in the second half after Moller was fouled in the box resulting in a penalty kick opportunity. Konno cashed in on the penalty kick for her fifth goal of the season.
UT-Martin cut the lead to 2-1 in the 74th minute after Katie Jackson scored after chipping the ball over Memphis goalkeeper Kari Rawe who failed to clear the ball past the Skyhawks' forward. The goal by Jackson was her team-leading 10th of the season.
Marr put the game away taking a through ball from Leanne McGee and chipping it over Dempsey's head from 20 yards out. The Lady Tigers outshot the Skyhawks 22-10 for the match as Konno had a team-high five shots.
