The Rice Owls used a penalty kick goal and an early second half tally to upend the University of Memphis women's soccer team 2-1 on Sunday at the Rice Soccer Complex in Houston, Texas.

Memphis falls to 9-5-0 on the season and 4-2-0 in C-USA action. Rice improves to 3-9-2 on the season and 1-5-0 in C-USA.

The Owls opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a penalty kick by Kate Edwards. Edwards netted her second goal of the match in the 60th minute that proved to be the game-winner for the Owls. Edwards goal was scored on a header. Ashley Lucas tallied the assist on Edwards third goal of the season.

Lady Tiger junior forward Ashley Berra posted her 10th goal of the 2009 campaign in the 28th minute. Averi Hallman notched her team-leading fifth assist of the season on Berra's goal. Hallman assisted Berra on three goals this weekend. With the goal Sunday, Berra has posted a goal in three straight matches for Memphis.

Berra moves in to sole possession of fourth place in the career goal ranks at Memphis with her 21st career goal. The Cordova, Tenn. Native, has posted a team-leading 10 goals this season which is one goal shy of her career total entering the 2009 season. With two more goals in 2009, Berra would tie four former Lady Tigers for the fourth most goals in a single season (12).

Memphis outshot Rice 12-7, but the Owls posted a 5-3 shots on goal advantage. Sophomore forward Lizzy Simonin led the Lady Tigers with four shots (two on goal) followed by Kelsey Bakker, Vendula Strnadova and Hallman who posted two shots each. Berra and Kelsey Robson each posted one shot for Memphis.

Sophomore goalkeeper Elise Kuhar-Pitters falls to 8-5-0 with the loss Sunday. The Spokane, Wash. Native, made three saves in the net for Memphis.

Sunday's match will be aired on the CBS College Sports Network on Tuesday, October 13, at 6 pm.

The Lady Tigers return to the Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Friday Oct. 16th for a 7 pm match-up against the Southern Methodist University Mustangs. Memphis will face Tulsa on Sunday Oct. 18th in a 1 pm match-up at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
