No. 8 Memphis Edges Colorado College 2-1

Memphis, Tenn.- No. 8 Memphis (15-0-1, 7-0-1 C-USA) defeated Conference-USA foe Colorado College (7-6-3, 5-2-1 C-USA) 2-1 on Sunday at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. With the win, Memphis finishes unbeaten at home for the first time in the program history with a record of 7-0-1. Memphis got on the board first in the 29th minute when redshirt freshman Kelly Gravlin scored her third goal of the season. Gravlin collected a loose ball at the top of the box and beat Colorado College goalkeeper Hanna Berglund to the lower right corner for the unassisted goal. Gravlin's goal was Memphis' 15th first half goal of the 2011 campaign. Colorado College tied the game in the 34th minute on a penalty kick by freshman midfielder Jessie Ayers. The goal was Ayers 4th on the season and only the third first half goal allowed by Memphis on the year. The battle of the Tigers would go into halftime tied 1-1. Memphis finished the half with eight shots, one corner kick, and two saves. The second half saw Memphis tighten the screw on defense. In the 61st minute, Colorado College played a ball into the box, but Elise Kuhar-Pitters came off her line to play. Kuhar-Pitters was unable to corral the ball and Brittney Lyman headed the ball on goal, but the Memphis netminder recovered to track the ball down just inches before crossing the goal line. Kuhar-Pitters finished the game with two saves, bringing her season total to 46. In the 61st minute, Christabel Oduro received the ball from the Tiger forward Melissa Smith in the box, and booted it to the right post. The assist by Smith was her fourth on the year, while the goal was Oruro's eighth overall and her fourth game winner of 2011. Oduro currently leads Memphis in points (19) and goals scored. Kuhar-Pitters collected her 50th career victory and ties her own single-season best with 15 wins, second-most in a single-season. The U of M is unbeaten in the last 15 matches at home, sporting a mark of 11-0-4. Since the 2006 season, the U of M is 38-10-3 in matches played on a Sunday. Memphis improves to 36-7-6 since 2006 in the month of October. Seven players now have three or more goals in the 2011 campaign. The Tigers return to the pitch Friday October 21 at Southern Miss. with game time set for 4:00 p.m. (CT). The C-USA showdown with be the 13th meeting between the Tigers and Golden Eagles with Memphis holding an advantage in the all-time series 9-4.
