Oct. 17, 2008
Dallas, Texas. - The Memphis women's soccer team took down the SMU Mustangs in dominant fashion with a 3-0 victory on Friday night. The Lady Tigers record comes to 9-4-1 on the season and 5-2-1 in C-USA play. "We are very pleased with the win," said head coach Brooks Monaghan on the 3-0 win over SMU. "I was very pleased overall with the performance." The first half ended in a scoreless tie. The strong Memphis defense did not surrender a shot to the SMU squad in the first forty five minutes. "I thought the girls just brought the right mentality today," said Monaghan on the effort the Lady Tigers brought to the field tonight. "I thought defensively we were very good, and our defense did a terrific job of shutting down their talented forwards today." As the game reached the 63rd the Memphis squad broke the game wide open beginning with a long goal from the right wing by freshman Lizzy Hildebrandt which is her second on the year. Less than two minutes later, Vendula Strnadova struck with an unassisted goal bringing her to five on the 2008 season. This is the third game in a row which Strnadova has found the back of the net for the Memphis team. And at the 69 minute mark, sophomore Ashley Berra put a cap on the Lady Tigers' scoring onslaught by netting her second goal of this year. Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Boyle only needed one save to grab her second career shutout as the Lady Tiger defense held the SMU squad to only six second half shots. "Our team came to play tonight," said Monaghan. "SMU is a quality opponent and we got a quality win. We have another win to put under our belt and now we're looking forward to Sunday." We're going to have another tough day on Sunday. They are a much improved from last year, but our girls are excited to get back out there again.
