Local Goalkeeper Lauren Sobral Signs With @MemphisWSoccer
Feb. 12, 2014
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis women’s soccer head coach Brooks Monagahan announced Wednesday that White Station High School goalkeeper Lauren Sobral has signed her National Letter of Intent to join the Lady Tigers for the 2014-15 campaign. Sobral is the fifth signee in the 2014-15 class.
“We’re excited for Lauren to join our program,” Monaghan said. “When we look for goalkeepers, we look for potential and Lauren is somebody we see a lot of potential in. I know this is being repetitive, but when you find somebody with the right mentality and work rate, we feel we can do a lot with them. Laruen fits that mold when you add the fact that Jonny (Walker) will coach her. Lauren has great size and she is fearless, which are two very good ingredients for goalkeepers. Over time, Lauren will continue to improve with more experience and we’re excited to see where that takes her.”
A four-year letterwinner at White Station, Sobral saw playing time at goalkeeper and forward for the Spartans. The Memphis native set program records in minutes played, games started and saves. She helped the Spartans to district championships in 2010, 2012 and 2013. Sobral picked up Commerical Appeal Best of the Prep’s honors in 2013.
On the club level, Sobral plays for Panathainakos. Lauren is the daughter of Peter and Nicole Sobral. She is expected to graduate in the top five percent of her high school class. She’s a member of the National Honor Society, the National Spanish Honor Society, the student council and the Make-a-Wish club at White Station.
