Women's Soccer Announces Spring Slate
Feb. 23, 2012
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - On the heels of the best season in program history, University of Memphis women's soccer head coach Brooks Monaghan announced a challenging slate of games for the Lady Tigers this spring.
"We have a tough spring schedule and we'll have our hands full with each match," Monaghan said. "The spring is a special time for us and it gives those players that didn't get a chance to play a lot, a chance to prove themselves with a lot of minutes. The spring has gone well thus far and we will be glad to play against somebody other than ourselves."
The five-time defending Conference USA Champions open the spring schedule at Mississippi State on Saturday, March 24. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. in Starkville, Miss. The Lady Tigers then host Ole Miss on Tuesday, March 27 in an 8 p.m. match at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Memphis will also host Vanderbilt and Alabama in the spring schedule. The Commodores travel to the Bluff City for a noon tilt at Mike Rose Soccer Complex on Saturday, March 31. Alabama visits Memphis on Wednesday, April 4 for a 7 p.m. match.
The Lady Tigers close the spring schedule in Decatur, Ala., versus Samford on Saturday, April 14. The match with Samford is tentatively scheduled for a 5 p.m. start, but could change due to multiple matches being played.
"The spring is really important," Monaghan said. "Last year, we had a great spring and it contributed to our success in the fall. The spring season lays the foundation for the season and you hope the kids go home and work hard during the summer, because that's what happened last year. Hopefully this spring will pay off in the fall."
Memphis will have 15 letterwinners on the spring squad, but replacing eight graduating players will be the focus of the spring. The Lady Tigers will have a new face in net next season with the graduation of goalkeeper Elise Kuhar-Pitters.
