The Memphis women's soccer team kick starts the 2014 campaign on Friday morning at the Park Avenue Campus practice facility with the first official practice of the season.

"As a coaching staff, we are extremely excited to get the ball rolling tomorrow," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We are excited about this group and feel that the group of returners are all on the same page. We have a really talented group of newcomers that give us all the pieces of the puzzle to be successful. It's all about putting those pieces together now."

Following a 13-7-1 season a year ago, Memphis returns 10 of 11 starters with hopes of returning to the NCAA Tournament high atop their goals. Monaghan begins his 15th season at the helm with 15 letterwinners returning and 10 newcomers filling out the roster.

"We have set high expectations for this season," Monaghand added. "Obviously, the goal is to win every game, but we want to get back to the NCAA Tournament. If this group comes together, with the schedule we have, we should be in a good position to do that. To have 10 returning starters, is a big bonus. We have to take advantage of that experience."

The preseason schedule features two exhibition matches before the regular season opener on August 24 at Alabama. Memphis meets Mississippi State on Wednesday (August 13) at 10 a.m. at the Park Avenue Campus practice field. The Lady Tigers travel to Arkansas State for their final tune-up on Sunday, August 17 at 1 p.m.

Memphis will be without two key players in camp due to the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Senior captain Kylie Davis and sophomore forward Valerie Sanderson will be with Canada in the competition until at least August 12.

Thursday, CollegeSportsMadness.com released their selections for preseason all-conference. Junior defender Diamond Simpson was tabbed the preseason Defensive Player of the Year by CollegeSportsMadness.com while freshman midfielder Sydney Kingston was picked the Freshman of the Year.

Senior forward Kaitlyn Atkins, senior forward/midfielder Nugene Nugent along with Sanderson and Simpson were CollegeSportsMadness.com first team selections for the preseason release. Sophomore goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel and Davis were second team all-conference selections in the CollegeSportsMadness.com preseason release.
