Aug. 17, 2007
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's soccer team will travel to the Auburn University for their first exhibition match of the season slated for Sunday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m.
"In this game we may see some things that we may need to work on," said coach Brooks Monaghan. "It is not just about the final score, but our overall play as well."
Last year's squad finished the season with an 11-6-3 record, and qualified for the conference tournament semi-finals, where they lost in a shootout. Memphis posted their third consecutive double-digit win season and finished third in Conference USA regular season play.
The women's team will hit the field on Sunday, with 16 returnees and 14 newcomers. After opening camp on Wednesday, the Lady Tigers look to experience live action for the first time this season. On the women's roster is junior defender Kate Murphy, who was named to Second Team All-Conference last season and Conference USA Newcomer of the Year award winner junior midfielder Maiko Higashiyama.
"It's early into the preseason and we're excited to play a quality program such as Auburn," said Monaghan. "It's a great opportunity to see where we're at and what we're up against. We are still trying to see all that our team has to offer. It's only three days into the preseason and we have a lot of time to be able to work on a lot of things."
The Lady Tigers have one more exhibition match on Saturday, Aug. 25, at 6 p.m. against Western Kentucky at home, before opening up regular season play on Friday, Aug. 31, at 5:30 p.m. against University of Arkansas- Little Rock, at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
