PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A hat trick in Sunday’s 3-1 win at Middle Tennessee earned Memphis freshman forward Valerie Sanderson the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor, the league office announced Monday.
After the Lady Tigers fell behind in the sixth minute, Sanderson single-handily brought the U of M back by tying the game in the 32nd minute and adding two second half goals. The Boisbriand, Quebec native logged her first career game winner in the 54th minute before capping the game with 39 seconds remaining. Sanderson totaled seven shots in the match, putting six on goal.
Sanderson leads Memphis with four goals on the season and has eight of her 11 shots this season on goal for an .818 shots on goal percentage. This marks the second-straight week that Memphis has had a player earn a weekly honor as goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel was the league’s Rookie of the Week after week one.
Memphis returns to action on Sunday in a 1 p.m. match up at Western Kentucky.
