Lady Tigers To Face Northeastern In Home Opener
Sept. 5, 2002
Memphis, Tenn.-- - After opening its season on the road with a team title and 1-0-1 record last weekend at the FAU Kickoff Classic in Boca Raton, Fla., the University of Memphis women's soccer team returns to the Mid-South for its first of five consecutive home matches starting Friday with a match against Northeastern. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m., at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
This will be the first meeting between Memphis and Northeastern, which is located in Boston, Mass. The Lady Tigers are 5-1-1 all-time in home openers and have not lost their opening match on home turf since the program's first season in 1995. Memphis' 2-1 victory over Florida Atlantic in the season opener marked the first time in the program's history that the Lady Tigers had won a season opener on the road.
"We have a lot of momentum coming back from a great opening weekend in Florida," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "It is always nice to play at home. The girls seem to play even better after they get to sleep in their own beds. They had a solid week of preparation and will be ready to take on a talented Northeastern team."
The Huskies enter the contest undefeated in two matches this season with both contests ending in 1-1 draws. Much like the Lady Tigers, who have 17 underclassmen, Northeastern's roster is comprised of a majority of underclassmen. The Huskies' roster includes 16 freshmen, seven sophomores, two juniors and one senior.
Memphis has two non-conference games next weekend at the MRSC against Evansville (Fri., Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.) and Mississippi State (Sun., Sept. 15 at 3 p.m.) before opening Conference-USA play on Friday, Sept. 20, against St. Louis also at the MRSC.
