MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Lady Tigers head to Birmingham, Ala. this week, to face off in the Long's Electronic Samford Classic, where they will compete against LSU and Samford. Memphis will compete against SEC West opponent LSU, in their first game of the tournament on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 5 p.m. The last time the two schools met, was in 1996, and the LSU Tigers were victorious. They will then compete against host opponent Samford on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. The Lady Tigers lost 1-0, last year against the Bulldogs at home and will look to redeem themselves on the road. The Lady Tigers are on a two game winning streak. They opened up the season with a 7-1 win against UALR. Memphis had six different lady tigers score goals in that match up including three freshmen. They were led by freshman forward Vendula Strnadova, who scored two goals in the game. Freshman forward Melissa Smith was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week. Smith scored the game-winning goal for the Tigers in a double overtime 2-1 win on the road at Arkansas. Smith's goal came with just three minutes remaining on the clock. She also scored a goal against UALR, in Friday's season opener. This is the second year in a row that Memphis has started the season 2-0 and the third time in the past four years.
