Valerie Sanderson and Diamond Simpson Net Weekly Honors
Sept. 23, 2013
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman forward Valerie Sanderson becomes the first player in American Athletic Conference history to repeat as Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Sanderson helped Memphis to a 2-0 record last weekend with seven points, three goals and an assist.
Honored previously on September 2, Sanderson had the game-winning goal at Florida Gulf Coast on Friday before posting two goals and an assist in the Lady Tigers 4-0 win at FAU on Sunday. Sanderson’s goal on Friday ended the Eagles 13-game unbeaten streak at home. With 18 points on the season, Sanderson has already climbed to fifth among the freshman scoring marks in program history. Her eight goals lead the league and ranks tied for fourth for goals by a freshman in the program ranks.
Sophomore defender Diamond Simpson was named to the league’s weekly honor roll, the first such honor for a Lady Tiger this season. Simpson scored Memphis’ first goal at Florida Gulf Coast and helped the Lady Tigers hold FAU to three shots in Sunday match. The Owls were limited to just one shot on goal in the match as the U of M posted its fourth shutout of the season.
Memphis opens league play at Louisville on Friday at 6 p.m. (CT).
