Women's Soccer Hosts Conference Weekend
Oct. 11, 2001 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Frustration is mounting and the Lady Tigers are desperate for wins with Southern Miss and Tulane coming to Echles Field for two Conference USA matches this weekend. Memphis has dug itself into a three-game losing streak, its second three-game slide of the season. The losses have come at the hands of then-undefeated Cincinatti, Division II No. 4 and local rival Christian Brothers and a devastating 1-0 defeat at 9-2 Tennessee Tech. In their contest with the Golden Eagles on Tuesday, two of the Lady Tigers' top defenders were forced to sit out after being carded against CBU. For freshman Angela Willoughby, the penalty came after receiving her fourth caution of the season. Suzanne Williams took the day off after receiving a red card for her physical play while marking CBU star Missy Gregg. With another group of Golden Eagles - Southern Miss - coming to town on Friday, the Lady Tigers will be missing another familiar face. Junior forward Ali Baker, the team's leading scorer (three goals) and most active offensive player (38 shots), will be serving a one-game suspension for poor conduct against Tennessee Tech. Memphis vs. Southern Miss Friday, October 11, 7 p.m. Echles Field The prospect of losing Baker - as well as an 0-3 all-time record against Southern Miss - puts Memphis in a tough position. The Golden Eagles, however, have posted an 0-4 C-USA mark so far this season and are looking up at a Lady Tiger team with only one conference victory. Memphis vs. Tulane Sunday, October 13, 1 p.m. Echles Field
Memphis has enjoyed limited success against Tulane. In their five contests against the Green Wave, the Lady Tigers are 2-3, including a 3-2 win last season. Both goal scorers from that victory are gone. Jessica Gjertsen (two goals vs. Tulane) has transferred and Tori Winslett was lost to graduation.
