MEMPHIS, TENN. - Sophomore defender Kelsey Bakker was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

The Kennewick, Wash. native has played in 10 games for the Lady Tigers this season starting in six. This past weekend, Bakker played a huge part in the center backfield for Memphis as they shut out both Houston and Rice in 1-0 games this weekend. She headlines a defense that notched its fifth combined shutout of the season Sunday, and has a 1.0 goals against average. This is the first Defensive Player of the Week honor for Bakker.

This is the first Memphis women's soccer player to garner C-USA Player of the Week honors and the first since sophomore forward Krista Turner on Oct. 21, 2007. Bakker is the first Defensive Player of the Week since goalkeeper Isabel Briones received the honor on Aug. 28, 2006.

The Lady Tigers return to action on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Dallas, Texas as they take on the SMU Mustangs. They continue their C-USA road trip to Tulsa, Okla. to face off against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 1:00 p.m.
