Leanne McGee Named C-USA Co-Defensive Player of the Week
Nov. 1, 2004
Memphis, Tenn. - Senior defender Leanne McGee of the Memphis women's soccer team was named a Conference USA co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for her performance against Cincinnati last Friday.
McGee played the entire game and helped the Tiger defense record their seventh shutout of the season, tying a school record. The Tigers lowered their goals against average on the season to 1.04, which is third in the conference and on pace to break a school record in that category.
She also assisted on fellow senior Monica Powell's game-winning goal in double overtime to give the Tigers the win and send them to the C-USA Tournament, which begins Wednesday. McGee passed the ball to Powell inside the box, who blasted a shot from about 10 yards out for the dramatic win on senior night. It was McGee's first assist of the year and Powell's first goal of the season.
The Tigers, who are the #7 seed in the tournament, open the C-USA Tournament with a game against the #2 seed UAB on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m.
