Women's Soccer Travels to Dallas as the No. 3 Seed in C-USA Tournament
Nov. 2, 2009
Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Memphis women's soccer team will begin defense of their back-to-back C-USA Tournament Championships as they will face the host SMU Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas. "This game is as important as any game as we have played all year," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "Right now we feel that it is do or die for us. Obviously, in the conference tournament it is do or die because it is single elimination, but in regards to the NCAAs this is a must to get that first win under our belt." The Lady Tigers suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to the UAB Blazers on Oct. 29th and enter the 2009 C-USA Women's Soccer Championship as the No. 3 seed. Memphis (13-6-0, 8-3-0 C-USA) defeated SMU (7-10-1, 5-5-1 C-USA) 2-0 earlier this season at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Junior forward Ashley Berra tallied two assists in that match as Amanda Olszewski and Kelsey Bakker posted goals for the Lady Tigers. SMU enters the tournament after defeating the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 3-1 on Oct. 29th to clinch their spot in the tournament. Mustang freshman forward Shelby Hartweck scored a goal and registered an assist to lead SMU to the 2009 C-USA Women's Soccer Championship. "SMU is going to be very confident and it was a good game we had against them," Monaghan said. "Obviously, we won that game, but it is always tough to play someone on their home field, especially in the conference tournament. We know that we have a big challenge in front of us." Six of 11 C-USA teams advanced to the conference tournament, which begins Wednesday with the No. 4 seed UTEP Miners (13-6-0, 7-4-0 C-USA) facing the No. 5 seed UAB Blazers (11-6-2, 5-4-2 C-USA) at 5 p.m. The semifinals of the tournament will begin on Fri. Nov. 6th with No. 1 seed UCF (15-3-1, 10-1-0 C-USA) facing the winner of the UTEP/UAB match at 5 p.m. The winner of the Memphis/SMU match will face No. 2 seed Colorado College (12-5-2, 8-2-1 C-USA) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The finals of the 2009 C-USA Women's Soccer Championship will be aired on CBS College Sports and the match will begin at 1 p.m. on Sun. Nov. 8th.
