Three Women's Soccer Players Named Academic All-District IV
Nov. 4, 2005 Memphis, Tenn. - Three members of the women's soccer team were named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV teams, one more than were named to the same All-District teams last year. Senior Robyn Smart was named to the first team for the second straight year while juniors Melissa Savage and Shoko Mikami were also honored, Savage on the second team and Mikami on the third team. Smart is a repeat selection to the Academic All-District IV first team. A defender who is double majoring in both Political Science and Business, Smart currently has a 3.92 grade point average and has recorded a perfect 4.0 gpa in four of her first six semesters at Memphis. The Noblesville, Ind. native has been a recipient of a Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal three times and a member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll three times as well. She has been on the Dean's List in all six semesters and is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. On the field this year, Smart played in 18 of the Tigers' 19 games, starting seven of them, while recording two assists and helping contribute to the Tigers tying a school record with a 1.19 team goals against average this year. Savage is a first time selection to the Academic All-District IV second team. A midfielder majoring in Business, Savage has currently compiled a 3.80 gpa. She was a recipient of a Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal last year and was also named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll last year as well. She has been on the Dean's List in two of her four semesters at the U of M and recorded a perfect 4.0 gpa in the fall of 2003, her first semester of college. Savage had another strong year on the field this year, as she played in all 19 games while starting 18 of them in her familiar center midfield position. A native of Arlington, Texas, Savage had two goals and two assists on the year for six points. Both of her goals were game-winners and both of her assists came on game-winning goals. She recorded all of her points this year over a five-game span in October. Mikami not only made her impact on the field this year, as she was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year earlier this week, but she also has excelled in the classroom as well as she is also a first time selection to the Academic All-District IV third team. After transferring to Memphis last year, she was named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll last spring and also made the Dean's List last spring as well. She currently has a 3.64 gpa while majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies. On the field this year, the Chiba, Japan native set a school record for points in a season (42) and tied the record for assists in a season (12) while also scoring 15 goals.
