MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Memphis softball team fell 5-1 in its season opener to Jacksonville State at the South Alabama Invitational on Friday night.

The Tigers (0-1) had a chance to tie the game at two in the sixth inning after sophomore Heather Mott hit a leadoff home run to lead off the inning. The shortstop hit the first pitch over the left center fence off the scoreboard.

Senior Leila Dolfo then blooped her second hit of the game and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Kailey Kassner, but the Tigers were unable to advance the tying run.

The Gamecocks (1-0) then scored three unearned runs to put the game away in the bottom of the sixth on a dropped fly with the bases loaded and two outs.

Sophomore Kimber Bossom suffered the loss for Memphis and finished with two earned runs on six hits and three strikeouts. Ashley Eliasson earned the victory for JSU on a four hitter with no walks and 12 strikeouts.

JSU scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by catcher Allie Barker. Right fielder Jackie Jarman scored the run from third base on the single through the left side to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead.

Nikki Prier would bring around the second run for Jacksonville State in the second inning on a bases loaded walk that scored Hillary Downs. The Gamecocks drew four walks in the inning and six through the first two frames.

After Memphis scored in the top of the sixth, the Gamecocks scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to increase their lead to 4-1. With two outs and the bases loaded, Downs hit a fly ball to left field that was dropped allowing three runs to score.
