MOBILE, Ala. - The University of Memphis softball team fell to No. 2/3 ranked Alabama, 7-2, on Saturday in the South Alabama Invitational at Jaguar Field.
Alabama scored three runs in the first and fourth innings to give the Tigers their second-straight loss in the young season. Memphis left six runners on base in a five hit performance with runs scored in the second and sixth inning.
Sophomore Kailey Kassner and senior Brittany Gooch knocked in the two runs for Memphis. Kassner's RBI came on a deep double to right center that scored senior Leila Dolfo from first in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Janelle Valle (1-0) suffered the loss in her season debut, allowing seven runs on 11 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Charlotte Morgan (0-1) picked up the victory for the Crimson Tide and gave up two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
The Tigers are now 0-14 against teams ranked in the top 25 nationally. Alabama was the highest ranked team Memphis had seen since the 2007 season when it faced No. 1 Tennessee in Knoxville.
Alabama took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after leading off with back to back bunt singles and a pair of steals. Cassandra Reilly-Boccia knocked the first two runs in on a double to left field and later scored the third run on a groundout by Lauren Parker.
Memphis put its first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Charlotte Morgan hit Kassner with the pitch to lead off the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Kim Sirman. A sacrifice bunt by Tori Gross and a groundout from Leigh Rowan advanced Sirman to third with two outs. Gooch then knocked in the run on an infield bunt single to the right side.
The Crimson Tide regained the three run lead with a run in the bottom of the second. Ashley Holcombe led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Brittany Rogers then knocked her in on a groundout to third base.
Three more runs came around to score for Alabama in the bottom of the fourth inning. Memphis looked to escape a bases loaded, one out scenario but a hit batter and a walk scored Whitney Larsen and Rogers. Kelley Montalvo then knocked in the third run on an RBI single to center.
Kassner's RBI double in the top of the sixth inning scored the final run in the game for Memphis.
Rogers and Reilly-Boccia combined for six hits, four RBI and two runs scored in the game. Jennifer Fenton went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Memphis will next play tournament host South Alabama later this evening at approximately 8:30 p.m. The Tigers close out the tournament on Sunday at noon against Northwestern State.
