Memphis Falls to North Texas, 9-1

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Memphis softball team (1-3) could not overcome a hot hitting North Texas (3-1) squad as the Tigers fell 9-1 in five innings at McCombs Field in Austin.
The Mean Green went to work early as Lesley Hirsch led off with a double to left field. With two outs, Jordan Terry drove in three runs with a double to left field after Brooke Foster and Taylor Schoblocher drew walks to load the bases. UNT added another run with a single from Danielle Hoff to score Terry for a 4-0 Mean Green lead after one inning.
In the third inning, Lelani Bernardino recorded a leadoff single up the middle to get the Tigers going. Morgan Mosby reached on a fielder's choice before Laura Curtis made it to first on a throwing error by North Texas, which Mosby attempted to go home on before being thrown out at the plate.
UNT struck again in the bottom of the third as Jackie Miller led off with a walk before Schoblocher singled to right center to advance pinch runner Madison Tierney to third. After a Schoblocher steal, Terry walked to load the bases for the Mean Green. North Texas put together two more hits to empty the bases for a 7-0 lead through three innings.
In the fourth, Hannah Harrell got her second hit of the night with a single through the left side. However, another groundout by the Tigers ended Memphis' chance to cut into the deficit. In the bottom frame, North Texas added another run with Brooke Foster reaching base on a Memphis throwing error. Foster came home to score after a fielding error by the Tigers to make it 8-0.
Mosby kept Memphis alive in the fifth with a double to right center for her second hit of the night. Mosby then made it home after an error by North Texas to put it at 8-1.
North Texas' Sarah McGann ended Memphis' chances at a comeback with a walk-off home run to give UNT a 9-1 victory.
Memphis will play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tomorrow at 9 a.m.to conclude the Texas Classic.
