Memphis 11, Wichita State 2 - Game One Notes

Keanah Prestridge made her Memphis debut as the starting catcher in the game. Jessica Phillips hit a line-drive home run over the left field fence to put Memphis in front 1-0 in the second inning. It was the first hit of the game and the fourth home run of Phillips' career. Maddie McKinley connected on a pitch in the bottom of the third inning and turned it into a double, the 11th of her career. Leigh Rowan hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning to put Memphis in the lead 4-0. It is her 10th career home run. Memphis held Wichita State hitless through three innings before Kersti Rowan got on base with a single in the top of the fourth inning. Memphis then turned a double play off a groundball from Kara L'Huillier to retire both players. Alyssa Palmieri reached base for the first time this season on a single in the top of the fourth inning. It is the second hit of her career. Lelani Bernardino connected on a one-out triple in the bottom of the fifth inning. It is Bernardino's third career triple, moving her into third place for most career triples in Memphis history. Heather Mott recorded her first stolen base of 2010 in the bottom of the fifth. It is her 10th career steal. Mott is now 10-of-11 on stolen base attempts in her career. Leigh Rowan connected on a two-out double to allow Bernardino and Mott to score and put Memphis ahead 6-2. Rowan had five RBI in the game to set a new career high. The RBI total ranks tied for fourth in school history.
Alex Marshall made her career debut as a pinch runner for Leigh Rowan in the top of the sixth inning. Jessica Phillips connected on a two-run home run to put Memphis ahead 8-2 in the top of the sixth inning. It was Philip's second home run of the day, marking her first career multi-home run game. The four RBI's are a career high. She now has five career home runs. Her two home runs in a game tie her for the schools' top mark. Alex Marshall scored her first career run on the home run by Phillips. Kailey Kassner hits a walk-off three run home run to give Memphis an 11-2 season opening victory. It is Kassner's 10th career home run. She also ties a career high in RBI with three. Memphis knocked four home runs out of the park against Wichita State, which ties a program record. The Tigers did it twice against Alabama A&M in 2008. Vanessa Walle picked up her first win of the 2010 season. The game marked the third time in five years that Memphis won its opening season contest and marked the first opening game victory since 2007. |
