Fast Start for @MemphisSoftball in 7-3 Win

LAFAYETTE, La. -The University of Memphis softball team scored four runs in the second inning in a 7-3 win over Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon at Lamson Park.
With the win, Memphis (4-5) finishes 3-2 at the Ragin Cajuns' Invitational.
Senior Ellen Roberts (2-2) picked up the win in the circle, pitching a complete game and allowing three unearned runs. She scattered seven hits with five walks and struck out three.
Several Tigers had big days at the plate in Sunday's victory. Freshman Lindsay Crowdus finished 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, sophomore Hannah Harrell had two hits, and freshman Calli Irvin finished 1-for-4 with her first career collegiate home run. Freshman Brittany Vaughn went 1-for-2 with two walks, and has now reached base in all nine game this season.
Ashlyn Michalak (1-0) suffered the loss for Valporaiso, allowing six runs on seven hits in three and a third innings. Sierra Pico pitched the final three and two-thirds for the Crusaders and allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
After a scoreless first inning, Memphis jumped out in front with a big second inning. With one out, sophomore Cierra Mangum reached base on a throwing error. Two batters later, Irvin gave Memphis a 2-0 lead with a home run to left centerfield, the first of her career. After sophomore Lindsie Knowles reached on a second Valparaiso error, Crowdus tripled in Knowles to extend the Memphis lead to 3-0. Harrell capped the Memphis scoring in the inning with an infield single, scoring Crowdus and giving the Tigers a 4-0 advantage.
Valparaiso got right back into the game with a three-run in the bottom of the third. With two outs and two runners on base, a Memphis fielding error allowed two runs to score, cutting the Tigers lead to 4-2. An RBI single by Amanda Wisniewski cut the Memphis lead to 4-3 moving into the fourth error.
Memphis responded with two more runs in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Harrell and Vaughn set the table for senior Libby Goranson, who delivered a run-scoring single to put the Tigers up 5-3. Later in the inning, sophomore Jaye Smith drew a walk with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 6-3.
Roberts worked out of trouble in the bottom of the fifth to keep the lead at three. After a single and fielder's choice, Roberts walked Janelle Bouchard to put two runners on base with just one out. However, Roberts got out of the jam by forcing two pop outs to end the inning.
Valparaiso threatened in the seventh inning, but Crowdus robbed a potential two-run homer by Sam Stewart in center. The Crusaders loaded the bases with two outs, but Mangum ended the game with a diving catch on a popup for the third out.
Memphis next hosts the annual Blues City Classic. The three-day tournament begins Friday and will be played at Greenbrook Park in Southaven, Miss. The tournament features 11 schools. Memphis will play three games in the tournament beginning with Morehead State at 5 p.m. on Friday. The Tigers will also face Missouri State and Southeast Missouri in the tournament. Admission to all of the games is free.
