Memphis Pitchers Strikeout 11 Batters To Help Tigers Defeat Appalachian State, 5-2

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers picked up a 5 to 2 victory on Fri., Feb. 19 at the Tiger Softball Complex in their first game of the 2010 Blues City Classic. The Tigers improve to 2-1 with the victory. Appalachian State falls to 1-1 so far this season. Memphis pitchers Lauren Carley and Carly Hummel combined for 11 strikeouts on the game. Hummel, a freshman from Bakersfield, Calif., picked up her first victory of the season after coming on in relief in the fifth inning. Hummel struck out seven-of-nine batters faced. The freshman has struck out 19 batters in 10 innings so far in her two-game Tiger career. The Mountaineers took the early lead in the game, going ahead 2-0 in the top of the third inning on a two-run home run to right center from Katie Boyd. Boyd was named the SoCon Preseason Player of the Year prior to the start of the season. The junior from Walkertown, N.C., hit 17 home runs in 2009, which tied for 10th nationally. The Tigers exploded for five runs on five hits and four errors in the bottom of the fifth. Kim Sirman started things off with a double down the left field line. A throwing error from the left fielder advanced Sirman to third and scored pinch-runner Cheyenne Mascarenas from third. Lelani Bernardino singled to right to score Sirman from third to even the score at two to two. The RBI was Bernardino's first of the season. Heather Mott continued the scoring rally with a double to left center, Bernardino scored from first to put the Tigers ahead three to two. It was the second double of year and eighth of career for Mott, a junior from Pensacola, Fla. Memphis went ahead 4 to 2 when Maddie McKinley stole second base and an error by the second basemen advanced both McKinley and Mott from third. The Tigers took the lead five to two on a Leigh Rowan double to straight away center. McKinley scored from third. The double was Rowan's second of year and 16th of career. It was the senior's team-leading seventh RBI. Lauren Carley, a junior from Houston, Texas, made her first career start for the Tigers. The transfer from Henderson State gave up two runs on three hits and had four strikeouts in four innings Hannah Dow took the loss for the Mountaineers. The junior from Mattoon, Ill., gave up four earned runs on six hits and had five strikeouts in four-and-a-third innings. Frannie Seader also appeared in the circle for Appalachian State. The Mountaineer pitcher gave up no runs and no hits in an inning-and-two-thirds. The Tigers will finish day one of the 2010 Blues City Classic with a 4:10 start against the IPFW Mastodons.
