Hopwood's Walk-Off Home Run Sends IPFW Past Memphis, 1-0
Feb. 19, 2010
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers fell 1-0 to the IPFW Mastadons in their second game of the 2010 Blues City Classic on Fri., Feb. 19 at the Tiger Softball Complex. The Tigers are now 2-2 this season. IPFW improves to 1-0 on the year. Sara Hopwood, a junior from Richmond, British Columbia, hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning off of Memphis pitcher Vanessa Walle to send IPFW to the 1-0 victory. Hopwood was the only batter to get on base against the Tiger starter. She finished 2-3 with one RBI and one run scored. Friday evening's game featured a pitcher's dual between starters Vanessa Walle and Courtney Cronin. The two pitchers gave up only one run on five hits between them. Only eight batters reached base in the two games. Walle, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz., falls to 1-1 on the season. She gave up one run on two hits in six-and-a-third innings. Walle had two strikeouts against the Mastadons and gave up zero walks. Prior to Hopwood's seventh-inning walk-off home run, Walle had retired the previous 17 batters. The Tigers best opportunity came in the top of the fourth inning when they had the bases loaded and two out, but Memphis was unable to capitalize off of Cronin. Cronin, a sophomore from North Delta, British Columbia, improves to 1-0 on the season. The second team All-Summit League selection in 2009 pitched a shutout against the Tigers. She gave up no runs and struck out seven Tiger batters. Cronin walked three Tigers in the game. Cronin had a 9-7 record with a 1.85 ERA as a freshman in 2009. Three Memphis batters picked up one hit each in Friday evening's game. Leigh Rowan, a senior from Marietta, Ga., continued a four-game hitting streak with a hit against Cronin. Rowan was 2-5 with one RBI in Friday's two games. The Tigers will return to action on Sat., Feb. 20, when they face-off against Indiana State. The game will begin at approximately 3:45 p.m. Play at the 2010 Blues City Classic will commence at 9 a.m., on Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex with IPFW and McNeese State playing the opening game.
