Tigers Trounce Eagles in Blues City Classic, 14-2

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The University of Memphis scored 12 runs in the final three innings to beat Morehead State 14-2 in the opening game of the Blues City Classic at Greenbrook Park on Friday night.
Led by a 3-for-3, three-run career high performance from redshirt-sophomore Wheeler, Hill, the Tigers (5-5) pounded out 10 hits for its first home victory of the season. Freshman Haleigh Ross hit a three-run pinch hit homer to center for her first collegiate long ball in the seventh.
Senior Ellen Roberts (3-2) pitched the final four innings in relief for the victory. The Australian native allowed no runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Memphis pitching combined for 10 strikeouts in the game with Jordan Richwood picking up three K's in the first three innings.
Memphis took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first inning, but Morehead State (1-6) scored two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers tied the game back up in the fourth inning and then pulled away from the Eagles with three runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and five in the seventh.
The Tigers were aided by five Eagle errors that accounted for 10 unearned runs. Tanna Seuferer (0-2) suffered the loss after giving up five runs on three hits in five innings of work.
Senior outfielder Ijiah Hargrove tied a career high with three runs scored. Freshman shortstop Brittany Vaughn drove in a career high four RBI and went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and two walks. Vaughn has reached base safely in all 10 games this season to start her collegiate career.
Freshman Calli Irvin started and saw her first time on defense at first base. Irvin went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Hannah Harrell went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored.
The Blues City Classic continues on Saturday with 10 games on the schedule starting at 10 a.m. The Tigers host Missouri State on Saturday in the tournament at 5 p.m.
