Feb. 23, 2014
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. - The University of Memphis softball team concluded play at the 2014 Blues City Classic with a 6-1 victory over Southeast Missouri (SEMO) at Greenbrook Park on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, Memphis (7-5) finished undefeated at the Blues City Classic for the second straight season. Memphis has now won seven consecutive games in the event, dating back to the 2012 season.
Ellen Roberts picked up the win for Memphis and improved to 4-2 on the season. Roberts pitched her fifth complete game of the year in the victory, striking out six batters and allowing just one unearned run.
A balanced attack paced the Tigers offensively. Freshman Calli Irvin finished the game 2-for-4 with her second home run of the season and also had two runs batted in. Five other Tigers, Hannah Harrell, Brittany Vaughn, Amber Lindahl, Wheeler Hill and Haleigh Ross, had hits in Sunday's contest.
Vaughn finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored, and the freshman shortstop has now reached base in all 12 Memphis games this season.
SEMO's Lindsey Patterson finished 2-for-3 with a run-scoring single in today's game. Aubrey Denno (2-2) took the loss for the Redhawks (4-5), pitching two innings and allowing five earned runs.
Memphis, as they have several times already this season, jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. In the top of the first, the Tigers, playing as the away team, scored three runs on just one hit. Ijiah Hargrove led off the game with a walk, then stole second base and later advanced to third on a bunt single by Hannah Harrell. Vaughn gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice bunt, scoring Hargrove from third base. After an Irvin single to load the bases, Cierra Mangum walked, bringing in Harrell and giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. Kelly Braman capped the first inning scoring with a sacrifice fly, putting Memphis up 3-0 after half of an inning.
The Tigers added to the lead in the third inning. Vaughn led off the frame with a double, and Irvin followed with a two-run home run to left field putting Memphis up 5-0.
SEMO responded with one run in the bottom of the third to cut the Memphis lead to 5-1. After reaching on a fielding error, SEMO left fielder Renee Terry advanced to second on a throwing error. Patterson followed with a run-scoring single to put the Redhawks on the board.
The Memphis lead moved back to five runs in the top of the sixth. With two outs and two runners on, SEMO committed a throwing error on an attempted pickoff, allowing Breslin Perry to score from second and give Memphis a 6-1 advantage.
Roberts had no trouble closing out the game from there, retiring the final six Redhawks batters to seal the victory.
Roberts was named to the Blues City Classic All-Tournament First Team for the second consecutive season, finishing with a 2-0 record and a 0.00 earned run average in 11 innings pitched this weekend.
Vaughn was also named to the all-tournament first team, after hitting .444 (4-for-9), and leading all players in the event with seven runs batted in. Hill was named to the all-tournament second team after hitting .556 (5-for-9) over the weekend.
Memphis takes its four-game winning streak back on the road again next weekend, traveling to Gulfport, Miss. for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic. The Tigers will play four games during the event, facing off against Texas State, Mississippi State, Nicholls and Louisiana-Lafayette.
