Memphis Begins Bank of Hawai'i Invitational With 6-4 Win Over Campbell

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The University of Memphis softball team (6-9) scored two runs in the sixth inning to secure a 6-4 win over Campbell (8-4) in their first game of the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational on Friday afternoon in Honolulu. The Camels got on the board in the top of the first after two singles, a hit by pitch and a walk gave them a 1-0 lead. In the second inning, Laura Curtis singled down the left field line to score Kelly Braman for a one-all score. Ijiah Hargrove followed with a single up the middle to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage before Amber Lindahl scored on an illegal pitch to put Memphis up 3-1 through two innings. Campbell added a run in the fourth inning as Maggie Christopher drew a walk and rounded the bases on a wild pitch, passed ball and throwing error to make the score 3-2. Hargrove got her second hit of the game in the bottom frame with a one-out triple to right center to bring up Lelani Bernardino. A groundout to short by Bernardino scored Hargrove to extend Memphis' lead to 4-2. The Camels knotted the game up in the fifth inning with solo homers from Stephanie Jones and Raven Lee. Campbell loaded the bases with a walk and back-to-back singles with two outs, but a fly out to left helped Memphis escape the inning without any more damage. The Tigers regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with Curtis reaching base on a double to right center. Hargrove then reached on a throwing error to allow Curtis to score for a 5-4 lead. A two-out single to left center from Breslin Perry brought home Hargrove to stretch the Tigers' lead to 6-4 after six. Campbell got one base runner in the seventh but two groundouts and one strikeout gave Memphis a 6-4 victory. Ellen Roberts (3-5) picked up her third win while Courtney Roberts (2-2) was given the loss for the Camels. Hargrove and Curtis each recorded two hits in the win to lead the Tigers. Memphis faces Western Kentucky tomorrow at 1 p.m. HT/5 CT before taking on No. 20/22 Hawai'i at 5 p.m. HT/9 CT to continue play in the Bank of Hawai'i Invitational. Game Notes
