Tigers Sweep Doubleheader with Central Arkansas

MEMPHIS - University of Memphis softball sophomore pitchers Kimber Bossom and Janelle Valle held Central Arkansas to four combined hits in a doubleheader sweep over the Bears at the Tiger Softball Complex on Wednesday.
The Tigers (10-8) won the opening game, 5-2, and then scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth of game two to win 9-1 in five innings.
Senior first baseman Leila Dolfo led the team with five RBI in the two games and finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a home run and a double. Freshman outfielder Lelani Bernardino had four hits on the day with three RBI and two runs scored.
Memphis hit four home runs in the two games, drilling a par in each contest. After being held to four hits in game one, the Tigers exploded for 15 in the night cap for the eight-run rule victory. The U of M has had 10 hits or more in four of the last five games.
Bossom threw a two-hitter in game one to improve to 4-1 on the year. The right hander had a no hitter threw four and a third innings before Sarah Garcia hit a single down the right line in the fifth inning. Bossom struck out the side in the fourth and finished with five K's in the game.
Valle had her second-consecutive two hitter after holding Arkansas-Pine Bluff to two hits last week. Both of the hits off the southpaw came in the second inning when UCA scored its only run in game two. Valle finished with five K's in five innings and did not walk a batter.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one on a two-run dinger by Dolfo, her second of the season. The homer scored freshman Kamri Chester who had reached on a passed ball after striking out.
UCA cut the lead to one in the fifth inning, scoring an unearned run on a RBI single by Garcia that broke up the no hitter. Memphis countered in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Bernardino.
After the Bears scored its second run on a suicide squeeze, the Tigers shut the door on a comeback with a two-run homer by junior Vanessa Walle.
In game two, Memphis once again took a two-run lead in the first inning on a two-run single by Dolfo down the right line. Central Arkansas scored its only run of the game in the second inning on a two-out RBI single by Julie Essary.
The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by sophomore third baseman Maddie McKinley and an RBI single by senior outfielder Brittany Gooch. Senior second baseman Tori Gross added a solo home run in the third, and Dolfo had an RBI double in the fourth.
Bernardino ended the game in the fifth inning with a walk-off two-run single down the right line that scored McKinley and sophomore Kim Sirman. Freshman shortstop Alyssa Palmieri also had an RBI in the inning.
The Tigers will next open up Conference USA play on Saturday in El Paso, Texas. UTEP will host a three-game series with Memphis beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday and closing with a single contest on Sunday.
